Pochampally Loomhouse is a family collective of handloom weavers keeping the resist-dye ikat tradition alive — every saree, dupatta and stole tied, dyed and woven thread by thread, exactly as our grandmothers taught us.

Our story

A pattern that survives only if it is used

Ikat is not printed on — it is planned before a single thread touches the loom. Our weavers tie and dye the yarn itself in calculated sections, so the pattern is already living inside the thread before it ever reaches the shuttle. That's what gives Pochampally ikat its soft, deliberate blur at every edge.

We work directly with 38 weaver families around Bhoodan Pochampally, paying by the piece rather than the hour, and keeping every dye batch small enough to trace back to the person who tied it.

This website exists so that pattern can travel further than the loom room — to homes, wardrobes and occasions well beyond our village, while the income stays exactly where the thread was tied.

The weave, in order

Four stages, one continuous hand

01 — Design

Graphing the pattern

The motif is charted on graph paper first, mapping exactly where each colour must fall once the yarn is dyed.

02 — Tie & Dye

Resist-tying the yarn

Sections of warp and weft thread are bound tightly and dyed in sequence — one colour, untie, retie, next colour.

03 — Weaving

Matching warp to weft

The dyed threads are mounted on the loom and aligned by hand so the pattern reassembles across the fabric.

04 — Finishing

Wash, press, inspect

Each piece is washed to set the natural dye, hand-pressed, and checked thread-by-thread before it leaves the loom room.

Come see the thread being tied

Studio visits are by appointment so a weaver can walk you through the loom in progress. Custom orders — colourway, motif, or size — usually take 3 to 4 weeks depending on the piece.
